A Fields of Honor Thank You

Thank you Marshall Community for Supporting the Field of Honor!
On Thursday, George C. Marshall High School’s Class of 2019 created a Veterans Day Field of Honor with 400 flags recognizing those who have served our country.  The Marshall Choir sang and the class was joined by four distinguished veterans, Principal Litz, and Marshall staff who worked with our students.  The class sent out 75 e-cards to veterans and their families letting them know a flag was planted in their honor and will be making a donation to Serving Together for each sponsored flag.  The Field of Honor tradition will be continued for Memorial Day 2018.

Camera Donations for the Art Department
The Marshall High School art department is seeking donations of cameras to support its ever expanding photography program.  Cameras will be added to our lending library for student usage in intro and upper level courses.  Any still functional camera will be accepted (digital or film), but 35mm film cameras are especially desired.  An itemized tax deduction receipt will be provided.

Please contact Patrick McDonough, pmcdonough@fcps.edu with questions. Thanks!

FAIRFAX COUNTY EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY FEE
Dear Marshall Families,
As part of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) FY 2018 Approved Budget, FCPS adopted an extracurricular activity fee. This means that ANY student who plays a sport or is involved in an extra-curricular activity is required to pay a one-time, non-refundable $50.00 fee. Extracurricular activities include high school athletics and clubs for which no academic credit or grade is awarded.
I wanted to point out a few particulars about this fee:
  • The $50 fee is the same no matter how many extracurricular activities a student participates in each year.
  • This fee does not apply to required activities that are assigned as part of a class for academic credit or grade, such as marching band or career and technical education student organizations.
  • Extracurricular activity fees are now available to be paid in MySchoolBucks as a school store item.
I kindly ask that if your child played a fall sport, will play a winter/spring sport, or is currently involved in an extra-curricular activity that you please go to MySchoolBucks and pay this fee. Please note that this fee is being counted on to help balance the FCPS budget. Should FCPS not meet the amount estimated to be collected, the remaining deficit will be passed on to next school year’s budget.
Thank you very much for your help in this matter.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey D. Litz
Principal

OK, this is what you’ve been waiting for…
What newsletter from a non-profit volunteer organization would be complete without a call out for help? Yes, your dollars are a necessary part. Purchasing memberships, annual passes, spirit wear, giant cards, buying Christmas trees and mulch are all a great part of how we fund everything we do for the school. But we need more than just a check.
We need volunteers at every level. Want to hold a board position? Fantastic! We have great people to learn from. (by the way, our monthly board meetings are open to everyone)
BUT, How about just a commitment of two to three hours per year?
I think anyone can handle that. So think about stepping up for something this year. Take a shift at the Christmas tree sale or at the concession stand, help setup and clean up the potluck at a sports banquet, take a shift selling spirit wear or memberships and passes at events, drive some students for mulch deliveries… there are so many ways. No hard sell, you just need to ask. Let us know at president@gcmhsboosters.org.
What a wonderful example to set for your student. Go Statesmen!

Practice ACT Test Nov. 7th

Want something to fill the long quarter-end break weekend?  How about signing your student up to take a REAL practice ACT.  What could be a more meaningful way to start off Election Day (November 7) then by taking a practice ACT.
It will help:
1)      Decide the age old question of ACT v. SAT;
2)      Provide practice for the real deal whenever your student decides
           to take the exam; and
3)      It will help the Class of 2019 raise much needed funds for Prom.
Date:  Tuesday, November 7
Time:  9:00 am – 1:00 pm (please have your student come around 8:45 so we can get started at 9:00 am.)
Location:  Marshall HS Rooms D201& D203.
Limit to the first 50 applicants.  If you took the test on September 22, please do not sign up again as it will be the same practice exam.
Please pay ($30) and register HERE.
The test will be administered by Kate Dalby of Inspiring Test Preparation . Ms. Dalby will score the tests and email or call you with the results.  You can then compare the scores with your PSAT scores from prior years and determine which test is best for you.
You can also meet face-to-face with a test prep expert from Inspiring Test Preparation to help you with this decision for free.

School Bond Referendum to Be on November 7 Ballot

A school bond referendum will be on the general election ballot Tuesday, November 7. Polls will be open from 6 am to 7 pm Residents of Fairfax County may vote if they are 18 years or older on Election Day and have registered to vote 22 days prior to the election (by Monday, October 16, at 5 pm).
The building and renovation of schools is not financed through the school system’s operating funds, but through bonds. Similar to an individual or a family obtaining a mortgage on a residence to spread the cost of home buying over a number of years, bonds spread the cost of major capital improvements over a number of years. As long as debt service costs do not increase significantly as a percentage of combined general fund disbursements, the county’s bonded debt will not be a contributing factor to any increase in local taxes.

Welcome to the George C Marshall (GCM) PTSA weekly email Blast!
Each week in this Blast we will literally be linking you up with all the information our Marshall parents need to stay informed.
The main goal of the GCM PTSA is to involve and recruit parents to help the school provide the most productive and wonderful educational experience possible for our children. We believe that effective communication between the parents, school, and the community is the key towards the students’ success – not only academically, but also personally.
Be an active part of your child’s education.
By joining the PTSA, your dues allow us to financially support/fund student clubs, teacher’s wish list, staff development, awards ceremony receptions, directory production/distribution, beautification, technical equipment for classrooms, and much, much more. You will also find numerous opportunities to volunteer – the backbone of many programs within our school.

For information about joining please visit our website.

CORPORATE BOOSTER SPONSORS
Go Statesmen!
We Are Looking For Sponsors!
Do you know of a business (or own one)  that would benefit from reaching the incredible demographic we have at Marshall High School while supporting our programs? It is a fantastic way for us to generate funds the Boosters needs to support our school.
The Boosters has launched their new Athletic Partnership Program offering Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities on several levels. The right decision for businesses and organizations interested in partnering with one of the top performing high schools in Northern Virginia.
  • Targeted – GCM High School and Tysons Corner Reach is a key market for corporations and organizations based in the GCMHS area
  • Integrated – Multiple Venues – Teams and Events and Print
  • Year Long Approach for the sponsor
  • Visibility – Recognition, Banner Placement, Advertising & Product Placement
For a complete description of the Athletic Partnership Program information:
Partnership Overview

Your referrals can be earmarked for your student’s specific teams!
