ADVOCACY

Advocacy is about using your voice to make a difference. It begins with sharing a story — one that your child, school, or community is experiencing — and then turning that story into action. That action might mean requesting a new policy, suggesting a better process, asking for funding changes, or promoting improved training opportunities.

Advocacy isn’t just for lawmakers — it starts with us. Every parent, teacher, and student voice matters. We encourage you to connect with your elected representatives to share your concerns and ideas. The table below lists the officials who represent the Marshall community at the federal, state, and local levels, along with their contact information so you can easily reach out.

“Advocacy is empathy, compassion, and community at work.”

-Janna Cachola

Advocacy in Virginia

Fairfax County parents and community members play a vital role in shaping our schools. From programs and resources to school boundaries and curriculum discussions, your voice helps guide decisions that affect every student.

Speak Up! Share your perspective by writing an email, attending meetings, or reaching out to the decision-makers who shape our schools. Every message counts and helps ensure our schools meet the needs of all students and families.

Call to Action:
We encourage parents, teachers, staff, and students to reach out to their state representatives, local officials, and school board members, sharing their perspectives on the issues that matter most to their families and community. Every voice is important — together, we can help our schools thrive.

Tips for Writing a Strong Letter to Your Legislator

  1. Introduce Yourself – Mention where you live, your connection to Marshall (parent, teacher, volunteer, student), and the issue you’re writing about.

  2. Tell Your Story – Share how this issue affects your family, school, or community.

  3. Add the Facts – Include data or refer to PTSA resolutions or position statements to strengthen your point.

  4. Close with Purpose – Clearly state what action you’d like them to take.

You can write one email addressed to your Delegate, then copy and paste the same message for your Senator—update the greeting and email address.
